Preservation. Education. Conversations.
About us
The African American Museum of Iowa is the only museum in the state dedicated exclusively to preserving Iowa’s African American history. It is the place where conversations start around issues of community, race, and social justice for those who seek to expand their knowledge and share their interests. As a statewide organization, we envision building communities that come together to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of Iowa’s African American history and culture through conversation, engagement, and reflection. In today’s world, it is essential to ensure that every voice is heard and understood. We want to make sure that people in communities across the state have the opportunity to hear the stories of Iowa’s black history, not only for a better understanding of Iowa’s past, but to ensure our state’s future success. You can help share those stories by joining in our mission to preserve, educate, and teach Iowa’s black history. Come be a part of the most forward-thinking museum in Iowa.

TWO DAYS! The AAMI reopens this Saturday! Local artist Marcus Irvin has been hard at work installing a new mural in our exhibit, Endless Possibilities. This exhibit traces Iowa’s African American history from its origins in Western Africa to the present—through slavery, the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement. Enjoy $1 admission to Endless Possibilities and our new exhibit Thirty Years of the AAMI this Saturday as part of our #GrandReopening!

Join the AAMI this Sunday from 1:00-4:30 PM at the Indian Creek Nature Center for "What's Before Dinner: Black Agricultural Fair." Did you know the USDA reports that there are about 84,900 farms in Iowa, but only approximately only 72 of them are Black-owned? That's less than 1%! The African American Museum of Iowa is excited to team up with Black farmers and agricultural organizations to showcase some of the amazing work they are doing to provide eastern Iowa with local, culturally relevant, and fresh food. Meet some of our area farmers, learn about ways you can start your own gardens in the winter, and take home some seeds!

Great to have a full table from City of Cedar Rapids supporting our incredible African American Museum of Iowa at tonight’s 2023 History Makers Gala at the incredible The Hotel at Kirkwood Center in District 5 ✨ Even prouder to see Cedar Rapids lead in donations for the newly renovated museum that is 50% complete. Renovations are on track for completion Feb 2024.
